Kavrepalanchowk: The World Health Organization (WHO) has designated Dhulikhel, a scenic tourism town in Kavrepalanchowk, as Nepal’s first ‘healthy city.’ This recognition comes with a $5,000 reward and positions Dhulikhel as the second healthiest city in Asia. The announcement was made by Dr. Suvajee Good, Programme Coordinator of the WHO Department of Ethics and Social Determinants, during a special ceremony held on Tuesday.
Dhulikhel earned this distinction by meeting the stringent criteria set by the WHO. The city’s impressive score of 65.48 has secured its spot just behind Pune City Banda, India, which holds the title of the healthiest city in Asia. The WHO’s evaluation highlighted Dhulikhel’s significant achievements in various health-related sectors, including policy reforms and sustainable development goals.
Mayor Ashok Kumar Byanju expressed his pride in Dhulikhel’s achievement, underscoring the city’s commitment to improving public health. “Being named the first healthy city in Nepal and the second in Asia is a tremendous honor. This accolade is a testament to our efforts in enhancing environmental conditions, expanding access to healthcare, and addressing both chronic and communicable diseases,” Byanju said.
The WHO’s decision was based on Dhulikhel’s progress in health sector reforms, improvements in community health, and primary healthcare initiatives. The city’s dedication to addressing the health needs of its residents, including marginalized communities, played a crucial role in earning this prestigious recognition.
